Once considered healthy, ocean food may now be getting increasingly toxic.
New research is suggesting that seafood may be loaded with deadly contaminants. Here are four recent reports which are making us think twice before we eat ANYTHING caught from the ocean:
Mass die-off of Seattle's starfish: Fukushima radiation?
"...the symptoms have only been seen in certain areas of Washington's Puget Sound and Canadian waters. While the verdict is still unknown, many are pointing fingers to Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant, which has continued to leak over 300 tons of highly radioactive water into the ocean every day." Confirmed: Canadian sea-bass contaminated by Fukushima
"...this is all comes from the Fukushima disaster," he said of the fish. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency tested fish exports from Japan for several months, but dropped the testing in June 2011, just three months after the disaster. Edwards says he does not understand why the CFIA is not taking the issue more seriously." Read article here...
Northern marine species covered in skin lesions, bald patches
"Despite extensive testing for a wide variety of well known infectious agents, the cause(s) of the observed condition in walruses and ice seals remains unknown," the USGS stated. "Advanced testing techniques for unidentified infectious agents is continuing as well as further testing for potential causes including man-made and natural biotoxins, radiation, contaminants, auto-immune diseases, nutritional, hormonal and environmental factors." Vancouver Island: Fish bleeding from gills, cause unknown
"Alexandra Morton wrote to DFO asking for an investigation and viral testing of the fish after she pulled up a net of about 100 herring near Sointula and found they were all bleeding. 'It was pretty shocking to see,' said Morton." Read article here...
No matter what purported health benefits seafood may offer, they have to be weighed against possible negative health effects from the toxic-soup which the world's oceans have become. Sadly, it has become increasingly difficult to find food which isn't contaminated by something. What's the solution?
Other than producing your own meat and produce, the best route is to buy your food from local, certified organic farms which you've visited and trust. Here in the lower mainland of BC we are blessed with dozens of organic family farms, where we can source healthy vegetables, berries, eggs and meat. Please continue to support them by purchasing as much of your food as you can from them. Although it is more expensive than conventional food, it is a long-term investment in the health of our families, our communities, and our planet.
